Amberley O.S.H.C.

Children are our future, We are dedicated to their success!

3.4 Homework

To support families and children, Amberley OSHC will endeavour to provide adequate time, quiet space and supervision to enable children to do their homework as necessary, with the express understanding that time in school age care may be the optimal opportunity for homework completion.

In addition to home work time, children will be provided an allocated time out of the afternoon (5:15pm – 5:30pm) for Silent Reading. At Amberley OSHC we strive for all children in our care to master the fundamental skills involved in reading and encourage children to experience the joy of reading.

As our prep children are tired after a day at school and often choose to stay inside during outside play time, we endeavour to play sight word games three afternoons a week. These games are designed to reinforce the learning of words that are taught at school and thus enhance the children’s reading ability. Providing a fun and challenging learning opportunity for sights words, social skills of sharing and taking turns as well as how to both win graciously and handle defeat, is important to us at Amberley OSHC to support the children in our care and their families.

The Nominated/Certified Supervisor may create and keep a homework list with the names of children who are to do homework each day. Parents/caregivers can nominate for their child/children to be added or taken off of the homework list at any time.

Children doing homework will be supervised in a quiet environment, away from the other children if possible.

Educators will assist children with projects and homework to the extent possible, taking into consideration supervision and duty of care issues in relation to the other children in care.

Educators will not be responsible for monitoring and signing off on homework.

All children present at Amberley OSHC at 5:15pm will be required to select a book of their choosing for silent reading time. A school reader is accepted, however staff will not be responsible for signing the child’s reader or associated paperwork. Books of all reading levels will also be provided to ensure all children have something to read.

It is requested that you inform the administration staff at Amberley OSHC in writing if you object to your child participating in the 15 minutes of Silent Reading at Amberley OSHC.
